Abigail (Devoe) Maxwell, along with her sons, Anthony, Joseph and William Maxwell, were among the poor evacuated from New York City in anticipation of the impending British invasion—the family, along with many others, were sent into Dutchess County. Also among these was Mrs. Sarah LeGrange who was the sister of Abigail Devoe Maxwell [9] [n17]

"Abigail Deyo"[n12] and Gideon Vervalen were married at the Dutch Reformed church of Poughkeepsie; in addition to her own children, by virtue of this marriage, Abigail became the step-mother of the nine young Vervalen children. [5] [n12]
